Ballon Bleu de Cartier Enamel granulation with panther motif

For this creation, our master enamellers have drawn inspiration from the principles of granulation, which consist of creating minuscule beads of gold and then mounting them on a plaque. Following the same process, the enamel was first worked in pieces or in powder form, then stretched out into delicate threads which are chiselled off into fine flakes and heated by blowpipe, until they are also formed into beads one by one. The size of these beads depends on the original diameter of the enamel thread from which they have been made. They are then assembled together in accordance with the motif concerned, the colour tone and desired volume. This technique is all the more delicate to carry out because the craftsman needs to take into account the details of the fusion temperature for each colour of enamel used. A very large number of firings are therefore required, sometimes involving over thirty operations, and with a clearly-defined order for placing the beads and enamelling. Nearly a month of work was required to complete this piece. The result is utterly stupefying: a panther’s head that is strikingly lifelike in appearance and expression, in which Cartier reproduces the volume required, the depth of its gaze, the prickle of its whiskers and the smoothness of its coat. This exceptional piece bears witness to the creative vitality of the Maison des Métiers d’Art and its ability to encourage collaboration between engravers, polishers, enamellers, jewellers, gem-setters and watchmakers to create a single spectacular piece.

Panthère Mystérieuse watch

The panther, which first entered the Cartier menagerie of animal motifs in 1914, is combined in the Panthère Mystérieuse watch with the mysterious complication, which has formed part of the watchmaking heritage of the Maison for over a century. An authentic work of three-dimensional jewellery sculpture, the feline, with its coat of diamonds and black lacquer spots, is curled around the dial. With its head, paws and emerald eyes, the realism of the likeness is all the more striking because of the contrast with the transparent dial on which the hands float in suspension, activated by the invisible calibre 9981 MC.
This watch features a spectacular volume and sophisticated decorative jewellery work, returning to the interaction of transparency and harmony typical of this iconic Cartier complication, inaugurated in 1912 with the Model A mystery clock, the first of a long line of mystery timepieces. Veritable “miracles of timekeeping”, in the words of La Gazette du Bon Ton, capable of freeing time from the weight of the physical world.
A mystery movement and the panther motif: the Panthère Mystérieuse, which has the double advantage of combining two Cartier icons, revels in the impact of the Maison’s signature aesthetic.

Panthères et Colibri watch

At Cartier the panther is omnipresent, whether in physical form or in spirit. Figurative or abstract, it injects its femininity into the creations on which it confers its refined silhouette. On the dial of the Panthères et Colibri watch, a panther lies resting with a hummingbird depicted alongside. The spectacle is truly charming... until the winding-crown is pressed and a baby panther escapes its mother’s paws to chase after the golden-winged bird! The mechanism thus activated is in fact that of the power reserve. In this new calibre 9915 MC movement, the time remaining until the watch needs rewinding is indicated by the breadth of the bird’s flight.
The aesthetic is exquisite and the decoration refined: the black diamond-studded background of the dial features an intricate wild grass motif. The fully gemset bezel adds a contrasting halo of light. The profile of the feline stands out by its volume, with its diamondset coat and black lacquer spots. This is where all Cartier’s talent is revealed, in its ability to transpose a watch complication to the register of an imaginary, feminine universe so as all the better to convey this tender scene between a mother and her cub.
